Interview with Melissa Hosack

We have author Melissa Hosack here with us, sharing about herself and her wonderful writing. Drop a comment below and be entered to win a copy of her book Hunter.

WR: Tell us a little bit about yourself. What do you write? Why?

M: I live near Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania with my husband, Jeremy, and our two year old son, Marshall Frost. When not writing, I enjoy reading as well as playing sports. I love going out to the flea market on Fridays in the summer with my son and simply walking around in the sun. I’m also an amusement park junkie. If there is a terrifying ride, I am the first in line! I am currently attending London School of Journalism, taking their Creative Writing Program.

I mainly write Paranormal Romance. I started out writing children’s stories when I was younger. In high school, I saw my first scary movie. I snuck the movie Scream into the house against my father’s wishes. Around the same time, I read Anne Rice’s Interview With A Vampire. I was hooked after that! I couldn’t get enough of the paranormal. I got into the television shows Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel, both which center around the paranormal. The addiction never stopped.

WR: If you could be any one of your characters, who would you choose?

M: That is such a hard question. Usually, the more I like a character, the worse things I put them through. I feel it builds personality and makes them interesting. I would possibly say Aurora from my unpublished novel Dark Rising. She had multiple paranormal studs vying for her affection, but then again, she suffered through the zombie apocalypse, had her entire family killed off, and was stalked by a psychotic serial killer. The supernatural studs outweigh the negative aspects…right?

WR: What is your creative process like? Do you need music to write? Silence?

M: My creative process is totally random. I get ideas from the most off the wall things. Then I just run with it. When I’m done, the thing that initially inspired me becomes such a small aspect in the story, one wouldn’t believe that such a tiny detail inspired an entire novel.

I don’t need music to write or silence. When I sit down with a pen and paper, I am able to tune out the rest of the world. I get tunnel vision as if there is nothing except my character and the story that needs told.

WR: What is a guilty pleasure of yours?

M: Role Playing Games. I am so addicted to RPGs. It is interactive writing with others that keeps me fresh. My RPGs keep me in constant writing mode.

WR: What inspires you?

M: As I said above, the most random things inspire me. I love Anthology books, because I enjoy the challenge of a theme. I’m inspired to find some interesting, supernatural angle for any topic thrown my way.

WR: What is one of your worst pet peeves?

M: Electronics! More accurately, people who are so absorbed in their electronics that they ignore the rest of the world. It drives me insane to go out in public and see someone talking on their phone while placing a dinner order or paying for a purchase. They are so obsessed with texting or the latest app that they can’t afford the person they are interacting with the respect of their attention. It is so rude!

WR: Describe what a perfect day would be for you.

M: The perfect day for me would have to be a carefree day with my family where we get no interruptions from work, other family members, or friends. I love the other people in my life, but sometimes I just need some downtime with my boys. I would love 24 hours with just my husband and son. The three of us could maybe take a trip to the flea market and go out to dinner.

WR: If you could bring any fictional character to life, yours or anyone else’s, who would you pick?

M: I would be tempted to say Kieran from my Dark Rising series, the psychotic serial killer mentioned above, but I don’t think bringing a maniacal vampire to life is a wise decision no matter how cool he is.

Instead, I might have to go with Peeta from the Hunger Games. Peeta was the most selfless, caring character I’ve ever read. After reading the first book in that series, I declared he was the perfect man. He upheld that title in my eyes throughout the trilogy. Then again, I prefer my heroes with a darker edge to them, so maybe I would choose Artemis Fowl. I would love to sit down and have a chat with that devious individual.

WR: If you could shape-shift, what animal would you turn into and why?

M: I would want to be something sleek and sexy with razor-sharp claws, perhaps a leopard.

WR: Where can we find you and your work around the web?

M: You can find information on all of my books on my website at: https://sites.google.com/site/melissahosack/ You can also buy my books at these sites:

We have author GR Holton here today talking about himself and his writing. Drop a comment below and be eligible to win a signed copy of all three of his books!

Deep Screams

WR: Tell us a little bit about yourself. What do you write? Why?

G: Well I am 50 years old and happily married to my soul mate Charlotte. I have 3 children and four step children. I am also the proudest Grandpa Fuzzy of four beautiful little granddaughters. I am a multi-genre writer that writes whatever comes to mind, but mainly science fiction. I write as a therapeutic way to combat my severe Bipolar disorder. It allows my brain to escape and be in places that I have never been before.

WR: If you could be any one of your characters, who would you choose?

G: Well I would be Pothys from Dragon’s Bow. A fearless but loving Centaur that is dedicated and loyal fighter that would give his life to save another.

WR: What is your creative process like? Do you need music to write? Silence?

G: My writing is usually done at 5 – 8 hour spurts...one day I will write until I drop and the next few days won’t write a single word. Those are my marketing days and town volunteer days. I love to listen to classic rock and roll when I write. It takes me to new levels all the time. Silence may be golden, but it is not for me.

WR: What is a guilty pleasure of yours?

G: My biggest one is probably candy. Mainly black licorice.

WR: What inspires you?

G: I am motivated to see what the next weird thing I can come up with. The stories motivate me to do something completely out of the box.

WR: What is one of your worst pet peeves?

G: I hate texting! I would rather have needles in my eye than to have to text back and forth with someone. If it important enough then call me.

WR: Describe what a perfect day would be for you.

G: I would have three cups of coffee with a large omelet for breakfast. Take my laptop and sit by the ocean writing my next novel.

WR: If you could bring any fictional character to life, yours or anyone else’s, who would you pick?

G: I would have to say that I would bring Sherlock Holmes to life to help me find my darn shoes. HAHAHA. No seriously there are so many great characters out there I couldn’t choose one.

WR: If you could shape-shift, what animal would you turn into and why?

G: I would become a sea clam and live for 400 years.

WR: Where can we find you and your work around the web?

G: The best place to find all my books is on my website www.grholton.com or at www.worldcastlepublishing.com.

Interview with S. Evan Townsend

Sci-fi author S. Evan Townsend is with WR this week telling us about himself and his awesome novels! Drop a comment below for a chance to win an ebook of your choice!

Agent of Artifice

WR: Tell us a little bit about yourself. What do you write? Why?

S: I'm a 51 year old guy who lives in Washington State with his wife and two of my three sons. I have been writing since I was 12 years old (so that's going on 40 years). I need to write like I need to breathe. Even if I'm not hammering out a novel on the computer, I'm writing in my mind. My wife hates it because we'll be watching T.V. and I'll start re-writing the show we're watching. I write mostly speculative fiction, that is, science fiction and fantasy. That is the power of "what if?" Such as: "What if there were people with magical powers that got involved in recent history?"

WR: If you could be any one of your characters, who would you choose?

S: It would be Michael Vaughn from Agent of Artifice. He's handsome, debonair, and a powerful wizard (although I call them "adepts"). The lifestyle he lives in pre-revolutionary Havana is a lifestyle I would enjoy very much.

WR: What is your creative process like? Do you need music to write? Silence?

S: I write to the sound of my computer's cooling fan. I think music would make it harder to hear the voices in my head speak to me. My creative process is basically two-fold. There's the "think stage" or what I call "pre-writing" where I think about what I plan to write and then there's the writing stage, where I actually write it. And sometimes it goes in directions I never planned. Then there's re-writing, when I try to improve on what I wrote in step two.

WR: What is a guilty pleasure of yours?

S: I'm on a twelve step program to kick Starbucks. But since I haven't taken the first step, it's going slow. I tend to drive fast and have done so on a race track which is the most fun I've had with my clothes on. I guess my only other guilty pleasure would be watching Mythbusters on the Discovery Channel.

WR: What inspires you?

S: Movies, television, books I read (both fiction and non-fiction), the news, conversations with people, and my intrinsic need to educate people.

WR: What is one of your worst pet peeves?

S: People who drive too slow. Also books/movies/television shows that are more interested in selling their message than entertaining (unless the purpose of the book or movie or television show is to get a point across). Or, and writers who don't do research on their subjects.

WR: Describe what a perfect day would be for you.

S: Olivia Wilde wakes me up with a soft kiss and a plate of bacon. . . A perfect (realistic) day for me would be first a trip to Starbucks to get my daily allotment of 1,3,7-trimethyl-1H-purine-2,6(3H,7H)-dione 3,7-dihydro-1,3,7-trimethyl-1H-purine-2,6-dione (also known as caffeine) and run into friends to talk with. Then back to my office to do some writing, then some reading, and since the sun is shining, go for a drive just for the heck of it. Then maybe a nice dinner and watch a movie on Blu-Ray and cuddle into bed about 10.

WR: If you could bring any fictional character to life, yours or anyone else’s, who would you pick?

S: Gandalf. The combination of compassion, strength, power, humor, and hard headedness just amazes me. Maybe we could go on an adventure together even if it did make us late for dinner. Of my own characters, Charlie Jones, only because I'm a little bit in love with her.

WR: If you could shape-shift, what animal would you turn into and why?

S: An eagle because I always wanted to fly. I watch birds riding thermals and I get so jealous. I might have a bit of a problem eating raw mouse, however.

WR: Where can we find you and your work around the web?
